Making connections—
  Parent to Parent,
Families link the past to the future…

Last night Oliver asked me, “Why does my brother with mux-ku-lar dystrophy make you happier than me? Everything he does is great …I want to be great too, Mom.”  It was totally unexpected and it just killed me. I thought I had always handled our situation so well. Obviously, I can do much better and I know I’m not the only one.”

When parents first hear the diagnosis of a significant disability and its life-changing impact, they are unprepared for the effect it has on them and their families. Parents of children with disabilities and special health needs turn to Raising Special Kids for support, information, and services. Through the hard work and dedication of our staff and volunteers, we help over 6,000 families and professionals each year.

Family support is the heart of our mission. For 28 years, Raising Special Kids has provided new parents with one-on-one assistance from experienced, veteran parents.  One parent stated, “I was given the number for Raising Special Kids, and they connected me with another family. It was so wonderful to talk to someone who knows there is hope.” Last year, nearly 300 families were matched with a trained parent volunteer, and over 90% reported obtaining the needed information and assistance.

Raising Special Kids also supports partnerships between parents and professionals to create positive outcomes for children. Last year, 1,300 Arizona educators, school personnel and health professionals received training and information to work effectively with families. Nearly 100 physicians in pediatrics and family practice residency programs completed training in family-centered care. Of those professionals, 97% report feeling better equipped to work with families.

“I want to tell you how much I appreciate the help I received. One of our infant patients with Down syndrome was having severe reflux, and the ER staff recommended a product that was not covered, despite the doctor’s request. I called Raising Special Kids as a last resort. You made some calls and obtained over 100 samples of the product, and called back to let me know how we could get additional product covered by AHCCCS. On two occasions, your staff member delivered the product to the family at home. I feel very lucky. You have restored my faith in the helping professions, and inspired me to go out of my way to help others.”

Raising Special Kids received referrals from 173 community organizations, state agencies, and medical centers last year.

Your support helps more parents become connected within our network of hope and encouragement.  “Families helping families” is not just a phrase, it’s the way we create a more humane and caring community. If you are able to give a gift now, your generosity is very much appreciated. Thank you for supporting the work of Raising Special Kids.

Sincerely,
